Driving in France:

If you are unfamiliar with driving in France, the following information may be helpful. Keep in mind that in France, people drive on the opposite side of the road. It is important to adjust accordingly and be cautious when starting off after a stop or when making right turns. French drivers tend to drive closely behind other vehicles, so avoid sudden braking to prevent any accidents. In France, flashing headlights indicate that the driver wants you to move out of their way, or to warn other motorists about police ahead. It is essential to carry your driving license and all necessary car documents, including the logbook, to avoid fines. Non-residents must pay on-the-spot fines if they are caught without proper documentation. Language barriers won't be an excuse, as the authorities have multilingual fine forms and may take you to a cash machine to collect the payment. If you pay the fine, make sure to ask for a receipt to avoid any future fines being sent by mail. Speed limits are enforced in France, and on-the-spot fines are issued for most offenses, including speeding. The speed limits are as follows: 50 kilometers per hour (30 mph) in towns, 90 kph (56 mph) on ordinary roads, 110 kph (70 mph) on dual carriageways, and 130 kph (81 mph) on motorways. In the event of rain, the last two speed limits are reduced by 20 kph. Be cautious at stop signs, as the police are known to monitor these areas closely. Overtaking and crossing continuous white lines are also offenses to be mindful of. When overtaking, use your indicators and give cyclists plenty of room, as they are considered a protected species in France. Roundabouts in France often lack proper lane discipline and signaling, so be cautious when navigating them.
