Until 1872, the current location of this house was occupied by the gardens of The St Laurent convent, a Benedictine convent of women. Today, it has been transformed into apartments known as Residences of the Abbey. The house is conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from the Bourges Cathedral. During the revolution, the grounds were sold and Mr. Alphonse-Joseph Charmeil, an art teacher at the Royal Middle School of Bourges and the founder of the Museum of Bourges, decided to build this unique house in the style of Napoleon III. He also added a kiosk and two detached houses to the garden in 1878. Mr. Charmeil served as the museum's curator for nearly 50 years.
